Divorce rates rise for first time in this decade

November 17 2017

According to leading reports, divorce rates have risen for the first time in around a decade, with a large proportion of middle-aged couples deciding to end their marriage.

According to the Office for National Statistics, there was an increase of 5.8% compared to 2015, with men and women now getting divorced at a rate of 8.9 per 1,000 married people - up 4.7%. The last time there was an increase in divorce rates was between 2009 and 2010.

The same statistics highlight that it is men aged 45 to 49 and women in their thirties that are now getting more divorces. However, it is the over-50s where the rate of divorce was most in the last twelve months.
