Growth and Diversity for solicitors

A recent report by the Law Society has noted several areas of growth in the sector as well as an increased in diversity for solicitors.

In the latest annual statistics published by the Society, there was an increase in the number of solicitors being admitted to the roll in England and Wales. During 2015-2016, 346 solicitors were admitted in total, which represented an increase in 4% compared to 2014-2015.

There was also a slight rise in the number of private practice firms registered during the period. In England and Wales they were 9,430 firms, reflecting a growth rate of 0.3%. The in-house sector figures also recorded a rise with nearly one quarter (22%) of solicitor now employed in this area.

The report also drew attention to an increase in the number of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) solicitors. The percentage of BAME solicitors has more than doubled during the last 15 years and now accounts for 15% of solicitors declaring their ethnicity. Another key finding was that the number of women within the sector now totals 49.5%, meaning that they are set to make up the majority during the coming year.
