How to help your kids during a divorce

September 22 2017

A divorce is never an easy thing to go through, however if you have kids, making sure you make their lives as easy as possible despite the huge changes around them is also a key thing to consider.

Whilst Grahame Stowe Bateson specialise in the legal side of divorce proceedings, our family lawyers understand that you might also want some help as to how to best make sure your kids are looked after. Below, we have listed a few things that you might want to think about when it comes to your children.

Whilst you may want to try and keep things amicable, it is not always as easy as you both may have hoped. A new relationship may begin, people start to move on and live their own lives, and it can become almost impossible to be amicable. As a result, simple things like whose home to stay at on the weekends is more complicated, and family occasions such as birthdays can be difficult.

It is however vital to remember that children are just children and might not mean to hurt anyone by their choices. A child will always love their parents equally, often regardless of circumstances. They will not always understand the complexities of divorce and thus their innocence requires protecting.

The crucial thing is to try and ensure no family member lets things escalate and affect your children in areas where it should not. Don’t be afraid of talking to your children about it. They might think, although wrongly, that they are somehow to blame for this and you need to remove those thoughts from their minds before it is too late.
